HOW CAN WE HELP STUDENTS LEARN RESPIRATORY PHYSIOLOGY? H.I. Modell. National Resource for Computers in Life Science Education, Seattle, WA 98115.

Many students seem to have more difficulty understanding the physiology of the respiratory system than they do any of the other organ systems. If we want to help students learn respiratory physiology, we must explore issues facing students and find ways of dealing with these issues. These issues include our extensive use of abbreviations, acronyms, and abbreviated speech; interpretation of language and our failure to be explicit when attempting to communicate; and our failure to recognize misconceptions held by students. If we are to be facilitators of learning, we must carry on a dialogue with students. We must listen to what our students are saying, and we must seek clarification so that we can better understand their needs with respect to learning.
