Membrane Potentials
by H.I. Modell and T.W. Modell

A model in which the electrical potential (force) developed across the membrane of an excitable cell can be determined.

(Compatible with Windows or Windows Emulator)

This project was funded, in part,
by National Science Foundation (NSF) Grant REC-9909411

This model allows the user to control the concentrations of potassium, sodium, and chloride in the extracellular bath as well as the relative permeability of the cell membrane to each of these ions.  After determining the experimental conditions, the user can measure the electrical potential difference across the membrane (from the inside to the outside of the cell) that exists when the cell is in a "resting" (equilibrium) state.

The simulation may be downloaded as freeware.

   Download the Program
To download the program, click on the link below.   If prompted, choose to "Save this program to disk."  In the "Save as..." dialog box,  choose the location on your computer where you would like the setup file to be copied (copying to the desktop is often the easiest option for finding the file).  Once the file has finished downloading, double click the "MemPot.exe" icon on your computer (Remember, the icon will be located in the place you designated in the "Save as..." dialog box).  The file will self-extract and install.  You will find the program under your Start Menu, Programs, Membrane Potentials.  At this point, you can delete the downloaded file on your desktop.
