General Models in Physiology

Mass and Heat Flow

Recurring themes or common principles occur in physiology.  Students are not aware that these general models can be applied to many situations in physiological systems.  The Mass and Heat Flow program is a simulation-based tutorial designed to help students recognize the relationship between an energy gradient and resistance and the resulting flow.  The program helps students develop a pictorial representation of this relationship in the context of "everyday" situations.  It then presents students with examples of where and how this model can be applied within the context of various physiological systems.

This program is available to download as freeware.

Download Instructions for Windows:

To download the Windows version of the program, click on the link below.   If prompted, choose to "Save this program to disk."  In the "Save as..." dialog box,  choose the location on your computer where you would like the setup file to be copied (copying to the desktop is often the easiest option for finding the file).  Once the file has finished downloading, double click the "Massheat" icon on your computer (Remember, the icon will be located in the place you designated in the "Save as..." dialog box).  The file will self-extract and "install."  In Windows, you will find the program under your Start Menu, Programs, General Model Tutorials.  A shortcut to the program will also be created on your desktop. (If you do not want the shortcut on you desktop, simply delete it.) At this point, you can delete the downloaded setup file on your desktop.
